Halkidiki is situated to the Southeast of
Thessaloníki and is one of three peninsulas, which resemble the fingers
of a hand. The Halkidiki peninsula is around 90 km wide and the three
fingers themselves protrude over 50 km’s into the Aegean.
The finger furthest to the West is Kassándra, which
is often referred to as “gentile”, a result of the peninsula’s gentle
undulating hills. The highest peak is only 353 m and to the north
agriculture dominates, producing grain and cotton. To the south are
olive groves and pine forests, with the latter providing resin for the
famous Retsina wine. Located in this idyllic landscape is
Kallithea.
The beautiful clear water of the Gulf of Toroni separates Kassandra from
the next finger, Sithonia.
