Excursion to Kassandra
In fact Kassandra is not strictly speaking a
peninsula, but an island. Kassandra is separated from the mainland by
the second longest Greek canal. The 1,250 m long canal connects the
Thermaic and Toronian Gulfs. The main road winds along the coast -
offering stunning views of the shimmering sea.
In Néa Fokea, one can view the 17-meter-high tower,
dating from the days of the Byzantine emperors.

Over the next hill is Áfytos. This village must been
seen. It spreads inland from the edge of the rocky shore. There are many
old houses and the old town square is filled with benches, low walls,
bars and the obligatory shop, offering more than any other square on the
peninsula. The square is also where young and old, locals and
foreigners, mingle in the evenings.
Other attractions are available on the southern coast offered by the
villages Paliouri and Loutrá, the Sanctuary of the Panagía Faneromeni
and the market at Kassandria amongst others. |

Equally rewarding are trips to Sithonia, past Athos
in the landlocked country of Halkidiki, on the rocks of the Gods - Mount
Olympus or the Metéora monasteries. |
